The Frequency Matched Advantage

Would Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, or Annika Sorenstam go down to the local golf shop, or big box golf store and buy a set of clubs off the shelf?  Then why would you?

Why make an already difficult game even more difficult by playing with clubs that don’t suit your game.  For many years club manufactures like Ping, Taylor Made, Nike, Callaway, and many others have tried to group all male golfers into the following groups (stiff, medium, regular, and senior) and all women into “ladies clubs”.  They have created do-it-yourself fitting systems with colored dots, certain weights, and different matching symbols to make up for the fact that custom club fitting takes time, and that selling golf clubs is about moving product that generates quick revenue.  They pay little or no attention to providing matched shafts, proper lies & lofts, swing weights, grip sizes, or the important facts that affect the playability of a custom set of clubs.

At Dr. Golf we have the professional expertise and experience to build your clubs so they are perfect for your game.  We know that customer service, attention to detail, and quality craftsmanship are critical to your game during the consultation period, the building process, and after the sale.  You will work with our professional club fitters to determine the exact needs of your game and the specification for building your clubs to ensure they achieve perfect performance.

Our experienced and dedicated craftsman Lanny Correll will then utilize his 20+ years of experience, his meticulous craftsmanship, and his choice of quality OEM components to build your set of clubs to ensure that each club matches the specs designed for you.  You don't even have to buy new clubs to accomplish this.  We can re-design and re-fit your existing favorite clubs, and by the time we're finished you will think you are playing with a brand new set.   That being said we all know that you still have to swing the clubs correctly to ensure a quality game, however when each club performs exactly the same as the next club, you will achieve more from your pre-game routine, practice time, lesson time, and finally “Game Time.”

With time your good shots become great shots, your misses are easy to deal with, and the feeling of the perfectly struck “Sweet Spot” happen more often than the misses.  Your ball flight becomes controllable by you and your ability to “fire at the stick” becomes the standard.

Shafts & Spine Alignment

The shaft is the most important component in your golf club.  A spine exists in all golf shafts manufactured today regardless of the type of material being used and regardless of the manufacturing process (extruded, welded, sheet wrapped, or filament wound).

Spine differences from shaft to shaft are a direct result of some sort of flaw in the manufacturing process.  This could be from the shaft not being round, a material break down, the shaft being heavier on one side over the other side, or just a small imperfection.  The result however can be enormous.  This usually results in the club bending in the flawed area away from your target line and causing you to hit the ball with an open clubface.

Have you ever noticed that you have a favorite club in that bag, yet every club is the same manufacture, with the same set, with the same shaft, with the same grip?  This is because the manufacture made that club in a “by chance” assembly that happens to be closest to what all of your clubs should be for your swing.

How We Align the Spine

At Dr. Golf we take the butt of the golf shaft and place it in a “Spine Finder” which allows the golf shaft to rotate freely.  When the shaft is rotated, the resistance force to the bending shaft varies throughout 360 degrees rotation.  When a “strong point” or the “SPINE” is approached the shaft becomes unstable and wants to rotate away from the spine.  Where does it go when it rotates away?  It rotates to a “void” which is a stable position for that shaft also known as the NBP (Neutral Bending Position).  If a perfect shaft could ever be made the shaft would bend equally in all directions and not have a spine.

By properly orienting the shaft in a club head, the maximum performance of the golf club can be obtained.  This statement assumes that the golf club assembly has been designed by the club making professional to obtain proper frequency (stiffness), swing weight, length, and loft & lie at the specific shaft position prior to final assembly of the club.  In reality the club will perform as if the shaft had symmetrical bending properties in all directions.

Before Frequency Matching/Shaft Tipping and epoxying the club for final assembly, it is “crucial” to do a final setup and study of the club head to achieve the best spine orientation performance.  At Dr. Golf we prepare the club for final assembly by testing the club for FLO (Flat Line Oscillation) at the 3-9 o’clock swing plane.  The purpose is to achieve FLO of the assembly so that the club only moves in the 3-9 o’clock swing plane, with no movement at right angles to this plane.  If there is any tendency for the club head/shaft to move in directions (oval or circular) away from the swing plane, we move the club head and shaft in increments of 1-2 degrees until the optimum FLO is achieved.

At Dr. Golf we realize that the off-the-shelf clubs you have purchased from your preferred golf supplier are your pride and joy.  Unfortunately there is not a manufacture today selling clubs off the shelf that have been “Custom Built” to your swing specifications.  In fact many golfers today get fooled when they hear “custom ordered” set of clubs.  This only means that they ordered a certain set, with a certain grip, in a certain color etc.  This is why at Dr. Golf we offer our services for Frequency Matching, Spine Alignment, and Loft & Lie adjustments for your existing clubs, or the next set that we can “Custom Build” for you.  In fact we are so confident that we will build you the “Best Custom Set” of golf clubs that we will guarantee our work for the life of those clubs, and make any adjustments that you need until you are completely satisfied.

After all there is not a PGA or LPGA tour playing professional today that plays with a set of clubs that are even close to “off-the-shelf.”  Every club they play has been Frequency Matched, Spine Aligned, and Loft & Lie set to his or her exact standards/specifications.  Why should you settle for less?
